QUESTIONS ANSWERED

LOCATIONS AND SHOOT TIMES

I adore shooting golden hour – the hour just before the sun dips behind the horizon. It makes for gold drenched backdrops, dramatic skies, flares of light, and beautiful tones. When shooting outdoors I will try and shoot at this time and I have locations I can suggest that look fabulous. I prefer a bit of a rugged overgrown landscape.  I do love exploring and photographing new places. I tend not to shoot outdoors in the middle of the day as it makes for squinting eyes and harsh face shadows. Urban environments are fabulous and I have lots I can suggest. Nothing beats a casual and cosy shoot at home documenting your home life. You don’t need a Pinterest-worthy home straight out of Vogue Living, your home is perfect the way it is because it’s authentically you and you can feel safe and comfortable. In home sessions are all about connection and bottling some nostalgia to melt your heart for years to come. I prefer to shoot home shoots in the mornings but I am flexible. Not all families are available in the late afternoon. We can make an outdoor location work in the morning too or if you are brave enough, sunrise is exquisite. I am currently exploring and trialling new spots for mid-morning shoots.

STYLE ADVICE.

Families:

One of the questions I get asked regularly is ‘what outfits do we wear?’ In a nutshell – just a fancy and cohesive version of your selves. Most importantly, I want you to feel like you and not pressured to dress a certain way or style. Have some fun with it, it’s a special day and these moments are captured forever.

You do you, but there are so many elements that can make a shoot look very magical. Colour is important and certain colours work well with my editing style. Lighter and brighter colours and earthy tones tend to photograph best as blacks can get a little lost in the shadows. Wear complimentary tones rather than matching, or wear different shades of earthy or neutral tones, then mix in some textures if the weather permits. One person could wear a print and the others could wear colours from that print. Start with dressing mum first, it may spark a theme, and you can work around that. Eg: Boheme, Rock ’n’ Roll romance, earthy and natural, minimal and paired back, eclectic, vintage, street style. Let kids personalities shine through, a comfortable kid is a happy kid.

Clothing that has flow in the breeze always creates some movement. Pop some bloomers on any little ones in dresses. Mumma’s could throw on a wide brimmed hat (I have many that can be borrowed in many colours) or some Cons/Vans to pair it down or some amazing boots or sandals to jazz it up. Ditch the large logos, thongs, neons, boardies, sunnies on your head, hairbands on your wrist, chipped nail polish and try not to get too matchy-matchy. But if you want to wear a tutu with cowboy boots I’m totally here for you too. I’m always happy to bounce ideas and inspiration leading up to our shoot together and can send some PDF’S of style ideas. You don’t need to spend a fortune on outfits.

Maternity:

Depending on your comfort level you could wear anything from a nice flowing dress that shows your beautiful bump, right through to absolutely nothing at all. A nice little crop and undies set with a lace or sheer duster is a lovely look to capture the pregnant body in all its glory. Nude in nature is always breathtaking too. Clothing that cinches above the bump gives the most flattering silhouette. Patterns can be a bit detracting from all the lovely curves although I do enjoy a little floral on a bump. Once again, let your personality shine through. You could wear your favourite t-shirt tied above your bump and some cute undies. If a sequin cape or a rock ’n’ roll tee is more your style then I am all for that! I absolutely love the challenge of pushing things creatively so if you have an out there idea, I’d love to give it a go. I have a client wardrobe I’m building, with dresses and dusters that fit a wide range of bodies.

Newborn sessions:

If you’re after the very posed and airbrushed newborn nestled into props I am not your gal. Whilst this is very cute I’m more so into capturing a baby as perfect and natural as it is with simple styling. I do however love to have a little play with swaddles and fabrics, so wardrobe could be more about highlighting your heirloom blanket or some lovely neutral coloured swaddles. There are so many beautiful and affordable items out there for little ones, just some little knitted or cute bloomers on a summer bub if you want to capture more of their skin or a nice plain muslin or linen romper / dress.  Feet and hands out so we capture those little teensy fingers and toes. I think the simpler the better with a baby outfit as you don’t want to draw anything away from their perfection. I have a few swaddles, fabrics, and a woven bassinet I bring along to shoots to make some sweet portraits.
